This enduring recorded course satisfies the statutory mandate that mental health professionals obtain one credit of continuing education on prescription opioid-related topics as a condition of licensure renewal. ![]() Discuss systemic issues of stigma surrounding patients with OUD and those receiving MAT, and solutions on how stigma can be overcome.Recognize reasons to refer patients to addiction treatment, including office-based addiction therapy (OBAT), intensive outpatient services (IOP), and residential services. Understand trauma-informed care including trauma awareness safety and trustworthiness choice, collaboration, and connection and strengths-based and skill building. Practice or recommend patient communication strategies and non-pharmacological psychosocial interventions including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and relapse prevention (RP). Understand the effectiveness of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) in treating OUD and special populations. Practice early intervention and treatment to patients with OUD and those at risk of developing these disorders. Identify mental health professional obligations in counseling chronic pain patients in residential treatment facilities and outpatient treatment facilities. Understand limitations on psychosocial support including confidentiality, competency, and informed consent for patients on opioid prescriptions for acute pain and chronic pain. Recognize the function of the New Jersey Prescription Monitoring Program (NJ PMP), and mental health professional obligations when providing counseling for patients suffering from opioid use disorder (OUD). Understand the origins of the opioid epidemic using relevant data.
